12,000 years ago, Australias landscape was recovering from the last Ice Age. Mighty Red Gums were struggling to return and recolonise the riverbanks, however the Murray River loaded with gravel from the Ice Age period became a swift flowing river that undermined the banks, the huge trees fell into the river and were swiftly covered beneath layers of sand and gravel. The trees lay hidden for 5,000 to 50,000 thousand years, the water and minerals slowly changing the nature of the wood, depositing chemicals to both preserve the original timber and convert it into a dense black colour similar to ebony.
This wood is salvaged, milled and kiln dried under strictly controlled conditions by a company established to preserve and develop the practical value of this unique resource, and exists solely to re-invest any profits raised in order to continue the exploration of the ancient Murray River area.
The wood is then crafted by a group of talented Australian artists and sculptors to reveal and emphasise the unique qualities of the timber in terms of beauty, grain and strength creating an exquisite range of bowls, boxes, jewellery and desk sets. The collection is valued for the rare and intrinsic value of the natural material.
The wood is composed of atoms that existed in the atmosphere and soils of the environment of 5000+ years ago…
