Bill Spencer is an inspirational wood artisan – his love and appreciation of wood is now seen in his exquisite creations. He sources wood from all over Australia and through observation and handling of the piece he formulates the design for each creation.
These specialty pieces are produced by Bill exclusively for The Sheil Collection and feature all Australian timbers from Queensland, Tasmania, and West Australia.
His choice of timbers is dictated by the availability of well aged timber with the interesting characteristics that Bill values in his art. He has been fortunate to have found several excellent sources of traditional Queensland timbers, Red Gum, Mulga, Silky Oak and the more exotic Gidgee, Beefwood, Budgeroo, Bendee and Queensland Walnut. Iconic Tasmanian timbers including Myrtle, and Myrtle Burl, Sassafras, Blackwood and of course Huon Pine feature strongly in his work as well as West Australian goldfields burls Red Morrell, Mallee, York Gum, Jarrah and Marri.
Boxes are almost as handy as a pocket on a shirt, making them different sizes and shapes can add to the décor of any room and turn a special occasion into the presentation of an heirloom, each piece is marked with Bill’s unique signature, authenticating his work. Also the timber type is marked on the bottom of each piece.
Using many traditional techniques and an intense pride in his work, Bill creates a beautifully finished collectors’ piece – each one an original, as all the work is freehand. Bill will make commissions as long as there is not a short time expectation – excellence takes time.
Enjoy your new heirloom, to care for your piece wipe occasionally with a good furniture oil and polish with a soft cloth.
