Don Sheil in one of his most famous designs, Flowering Gum has incorporated all of Australia’s 700 eucalypt species to produce a stunning interpretation of the flora. The beautiful Australian Flowering Gum has been captured to perfection in highly individual pieces creating a unique series. Each piece is formed by hand, individual patterns are drawn and acid etched and buffed- meaning that no two pieces will ever be exactly the same.
The most readily recognisable characteristics of Eucalyptus species are the distinctive flowers and fruit (capsules or “Gumnuts”). Flowers have numerous fluffy stamens which may be white, cream, yellow, pink or red, flowers have no petals, but instead decorate themselves with the many showy stamens. As the stamens expand, the operculum is forced off, splitting away from the cup-like base of the flower; this is one of the features that unites the genus. The woody fruits or capsules are roughly cone-shaped and have valves at the end which open to release the seeds. Eucalyptus is a diverse genus of flowering trees (and a few shrubs) in the myrtle family, Myrtaceae. Members of the genus dominate the tree flora of Australia.
Australian author May Gibbs based her series of children’s books, Tales of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, who are the Gumnut Babies and are modeled on the appearance of young eucalyptus nuts.
The Flowering Gum series symbolizes all that is the Australian countryside. Its functionality, originality and meticulous craftsmanship make it perfect for a unique Australian presentation.
